Bioscope – Scienscope January 2025

As a school we have the opportunity to participate in the Scienscope activities organised by the University of Geneva.

As part of the children’s STEM Wednesday morning activities two groups of 7P/8P children took part in a Bioscope workshop at HUG (Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève).

Bioscope creates scientific workshops associated with life sciences and health.

The activities we undertook were linked to analysing food and unravelling the mechanisms of digestion.

We looked at questions such as : How does the body extract what it needs from our food ?

What is the difference between fast and slow sugars ? Are there fast sugars in a slice of bread ?

In the workshop we firstly examined in detail how the different parts of the digestive tract digest food, in order for our bodies to absorb the nutrients that are useful to us.

A second experiment helped us to learn more about the carbohydrate family.

We tested different foods by measuring the quantities of slow and fast sugars they contain.

To end our morning we had a discussion on the health issues surrounding added sugars in industrial food.

We’re sure the children will now reflect a little more on the contents of their snacks, drinks and meals in the future !
