Wednesdays are special at La Découverte, they’re unlike a regular day. There are fewer children, specialist teachers, and a variety of different subjects, all of which creates a different atmosphere at school.
Wednesdays are special at La Découverte, they’re unlike a regular day. There are fewer children, specialist teachers, and a variety of different subjects, all of which creates a different atmosphere at school.
In the blog this week we’ll look at the various activities of the 7P and 8P children, we will do another blog at a later date explaining Wednesday mornings for the 5P and 6P children.
Unlike their usual days at school, the 7P and 8P children are in mixed groups. The groups are also smaller than usual with approximately 12 children in each.
There are a total of 4 different activities, they do two each morning for approximately 8 weeks, before switching to the other two activities. All of the classes are given in English.
There is a creative writing workshop with Eve, art with Ciara, digital citizenship classes with Naiara and STEM activities with Tim.
Writing
In Creative Writing, the children have recently explored a range of linguistic techniques to improve their writing in English.
They have designed their own characters and settings, and they have generated lots of wonderful vocabulary to describe them. The children then used these characters and places to write their own adventure stories.
Steam
STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Art and Mathematics. Recently we’ve been looking at electricity in connection with our theme of the year, light.
We have created wands, made batteries and assembled complex circuits activating lights, buzzers and motors.
In STEAM we seek to stimulate innovative thinking, encourage curiosity, inspire creativity and foster collaboration and communication.
Art
In art the children have examined the world of wallpaper and they even had a go at producing their own!!! They looked at William Morris and his designs, contemporary designer collections, several swatch books containing actual wallpaper…
They analysed the practicalities, costs and techniques of making their own wallpaper, following the evolution of young You tubers renovating their chateau with their wallpaper.
Art elements that were looked at include: Composition, negative space, pattern, the repeat, the concepts of seasonal collections(Spring/Summer etc.), the vital role of colour.
Altogether a happy project that produced some fun visuals!
IT
In Digital Citizenship at École La Découverte, students have learned how to use technology in responsible, creative, and ethical ways.
Through engaging projects, they develop skills to navigate the digital world safely and thoughtfully, exploring topics like online safety, digital footprint and communication, and the impact of technology on society.
These lessons empower them to make smart, positive choices in their online interactions and to use digital tools as a force for good.
